How to Keep Your Christmas Tree Alive ‘til New Years

You and your family have picked out the perfect Christmas Tree, now you are probably wondering what can you do to help it stay fresh and green through the holidays. We’ve got a few quick tips to help you keep your tree smelling and looking good for over four weeks.

Fresh Start You’ll notice that the trunk of the tree has been sealed with sap from its original cut. The sap will hinder its ability to absorb water, so give your tree a fresh start by cutting 1-2” off the trunk using a saw. Be sure to wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying shavings.

A Tall Glass of Water Your tree was cut down weeks before it arrived in your home, so it is very thirsty from all the traveling. If you aren’t ready to bring the tree in the house, stick it in a 5 gallon Friedman’s bucket full of clean water. Otherwise place it in your tree stand and fill with water. Now is also a good time to put in your tree funnel ($5.99 at Friedman’s). The tree funnel makes it so much easier to water your tree daily. With this 4-foot standing funnel, you won’t have to crawl under the tree branches to top off the water each day.

Placement Examine where you want to put your tree. Avoid areas near fireplaces, heater vents or radiators. Hot dry air will rapidly dry out your tree. Fresh green trees not only keep their scent, green coloring and shape, but healthy branches also keep your ornaments from falling to the floor.

Supplements Some suggest using aspirin, corn syrup or sugar dissolved in water to help keep your tree lively. The jury is still out on whether this aides in longevity. However, there are a few cut tree preservative products that can help extend the lifespan of your tree. Try Miracle Gro for Christmas Trees to lessen needle drop and Wilt Stop, made with natural ingredients, is exceptional for reducing the amount of moisture released through the branches and needles. These products can be used separately or in tandem.

When it is time to take down the tree, we recommend confirming with your waste management group about tree disposal. Most waste management groups recycle unflocked Christmas trees and turn them into a highly prized acidic compost and mulch. Be sure to remove all ornaments, lights, tinsel and metal or wood stands.

From Friedman’s Home Improvement, we wish you a lovely holiday season, and we hope you enjoy your fresh Christmas tree.
